How can I learn more about a topic?
Answer
Do you have an idea for a topic but want to learn more first?
Background research helps you develop your topic as well as giving you ideas for search terms or keywords.
- Start with Reference sources to find introductory and background information on a topic.
- Find print reference sources such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, and more on the first floor near the DISCOVERe hub.
- Reference databases are online versions of those dictionaries and encyclopedias. Gale Virtual Reference Library and Oxford Reference Online are two popular resources.
- Opposing Viewpoints and CQ Researcher provide background information on specifically for controversial topics.
- Look at books on your topic. Books cover a topic at greater length and in more detail than reference entries. Find some books or ebooks related to your topic, read through the tables of contents, and read or skim the chapters most relevant to your research.
- Check the library Research Guides for your subject area to find resources you can explore.
- Your instructor is a great resource! They understand your assignment and can provide great advice about the topic and how to frame it.
- Ask a Librarian. We're available at the Research Help Desk on the first floor of the library and through 24/7 chat and email.
