How do I find movie reviews from newspapers?
Answer
The best database the library has for finding movie reviews published in newspapers is U.S. Newsstream from ProQuest. Find it from the library homepage by choosing "Databases By Subject" then "Newspapers." Scroll down to find U.S. Newsstream [ProQuest] and follow the link.
You can just type the title of the movie in the search box and hope for the best, but there are several features that will help focus your results on movie reviews:
- Use the dropdown menu by the search box to choose "Document title -- TITLE." This will limit your search to items that have the movie title in the article title, excluding articles that may just happen to use the same words.
- Under "Publication date:" choose "Specific date range." Then fill in the year the movie came out for the Start date, and maybe the year after for the End date.
Then scroll down the page and choose two more options:
- Under "Source type," choose "Newspapers."
- Under "Document type," choose "Review."
Choose the "Search" button and hopefully you will see some good results! You may want to choose the "Full text" checkbox to see only reviews that you can read immediately in the database.
Select a title to read the review. You can use the tools at top right to save a PDF, generate a citation, or email the review to yourself.
