How do I find who has cited a work?

Academic research and scholarship is a conversation, where one work builds on or reacts to another. A scholarly article will usually include a reference list or bibliography that shows the earlier works that it cites. But how can you follow the conversation in the other direction, finding later articles that cite a given article?

Answer

There are a few tools available to find citations to an article, and it's worth trying more than one since they may give different results!

OneSearch

OneSearch results for articles will often include icons you can select to find the works that cite an article and the works that the article cites.

Google Scholar

Google Scholar results include a "Cited by" link that shows the number of citations Google Scholar knows about. Choose the link to see the citing articles.

Databases

Some library databases include information on citing and cited works. Web of Science in particular was created in order to track citations. This example from Web of Science shows numbers of citations (sources that cite this one) and references (sources that are cited by this source).
