How can I easily browse for books on my topic?
Answer
Books in the library are organized according to subject. This means that you can often find many books on the same topic in one area. Browsing can be an effective strategy for finding books on your topic, but the lower level book collection is much too large to browse without knowing where to look! There are a few strategies for browsing books on your topic:
Browse print books by call number
To browse books on your topic by call number, start on the library homepage. In the OneSearch box, enter they keywords for your topic and select Books & Media. Look through your results, and pay attention to the call numbers.
If you notice several call numbers that start the same, you have identified one section of the library with books on your topic. You can browse that area to find more books on your topic. It is not uncommon to find several areas of our book collection that have books on your topic, so you may have to look at more than one section.
Browse print books and ebooks by subject heading
Each book in the library is assigned subject headings, which group books on the same topic together.
To browse by subject heading, start at the library homepage, in the OneSearch box, search for your topic in Books & Media. When you have identified a book on your topic, click the title.
After clicking the title, in an area labeled Details, you will see a list of Subjects These are the subject headings for your topic. Select a subject heading to search for more books with the same subject heading.
