I'm researching the dark side of a company for an English class assignment.

Answer

If you are a student in Professor Jeffrey Carman's ENG 1103 First Year Composition class, here are our recommendations for the "dark side" research paper.

  1. Start with one of these library databases: Global Newsstream or ABI/Inform. Global Newsstream covers news from all over the world, and ABI/Inform covers both news and academic research focused on the business world.

  2. Using Advanced Search, type your company's name into the first text field. Type the words lawsuit* OR controvers* into the second text field. The asterisk (*) substitutes for any letter or letters. This search string will provide results that include the words lawsuit or lawsuits as well as controversy, controversies, or controversial.

  3. If you get an overwhelming number of results, try this: change the search for your company  name from Anywhere to Company/Organization.

  4. Skim the results for any items that catch your eye. Use the Preview feature to look at summaries of the articles. This will save you time and help you find the most relevant items.

  5. Note the publication date as well as the date of the events being described. These databases cover over a hundred years of news and research, and it's important to cite dates to put events into context.
